To date, Steam is the largest digital distribution platform for PC gaming, with a total of $4.3 billion worth of titles purchased by users by 2017, and is estimated to have at least 150 million registered users, peaking at 18.5 million active users. A year later, on September 11, 2003, the client was officially released. The development of the platform began in 2002, publicly announced at the Game Developers Conference event on March 22, and released as a beta on the same day. Steam also comes with game installation and automatic updating, along with community features such as friend lists, groups, in-game chat and voice functionality, and cloud saving. Did you know that Valve Corporation, before implementing their Steam platform, approached Microsoft Corporation, Yahoo!, and RealNetworks with a partnership offer and were subsequently rejected by all three? Steam is Valve Corporation’s very own digital distribution platform which offers users with digital rights management, multiplayer gaming, video streaming, and social networking services.
